"What happens when you take the intelligence of Steve Urkel, add a heaping of stereotypical valley girl, mix in a dash of Daria’s dryness, and finish off with a pinch of just general creepiness? You get one deceptively complex character. Someone all too present in our society, yet vastly overlooked. You get a modern-day teenage girl. You get Marcy.
With a name as uncommon as Marcela – growing up, I never found my name on those souvenir key-chains or personalized coffee mugs – I never thought I’d take on a character with my name. Granted, “Marcy” is not “Marcela,” but in a weird way it seemed like fate when I first read the script for “Dog Sees God.” I had actually been dubbed “Marcie” in high school (amongst other things…the minds of adolescent girls can be so fascinating at times!). While there is a deviation in the spelling, that universal desire to belong resonates with both the fictional Marcy and the actual Marcie. Wow, did I just refer to myself in the third person? That’s such a Marcy thing to do!
Like my character, there is always that image we strive to project to the world. Whether subconsciously or not, we act in a certain way or bury who we truly are to create the version of ourselves we want put into society. For Marcy, that comes in the form of a shallow valley girl who hides her intelligence. In the maelstrom of identity confusion and competition that is high school, retaining her status in the “it” group is key to the layered teenager.
I hope to continue to evolve with Marcy and add as much dimension to her as a character. We’ve been on an interesting journey so far. I look forward to the hair flipping, fact spouting, and general teenage awkwardness of the weeks to come." - Marcela G
